The Gridded Population of the World, Version 4 (GPWv4): Population Density, Revision 11 consists of estimates of human population density (number of persons per square kilometer) based on counts consistent with national censuses and population registers, for the years 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. A proportional allocation gridding algorithm, utilizing approximately 13.5 million national and sub-national administrative units, was used to assign population counts to 30 arc-second grid cells.

The table shows that approximately 43% of GDP was derived a) agriculture forestry and fisheries and b) industry (including mining, water etc). The natural environment surrounding the Gold Ridge mine has been modified substantially and requires an ongoing monitoring program to ensure the ecosystem services of food and water for the local communities continue to be safe. This dataset hosts an article relating to a study that assessed the catchments surrounding the Gold Ridge gold mine (Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands) and found that extensive changes in river course, and water and sediment quality have occurred downstream of the gold mine since its development.

A two days waste management workshop was conducted in the provincial capital of Central Province, Tulagi on Tuesday 30th July 2019 to Wednesday 31st July 2019. In the 30th SPREP meeting held in September this year, the meeting supported the scaling up of environment data management in the Pacific and directed the Secretariat to initiate a process for developing a full-sized project proposal to support the scaling up environmental data management work in the region.

Later in October,  the Inform Project participating countries collectively agree on the need to scale up and extend the Inform Project services beyond 2022.

The Pacific Network for Environmental Assessment (PNEA) Portal is an initiative of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to support government officials from Pacific Island countries and territories who work with environmental impact assessment (EIA), strategic environmental assessment (SEA) as well as Environmental and Social Safeguards (ESS). 

The portal complements SPREP’s current capacity building program for EIA and SEA - including the recently launched Regional EIA Guidelines, the Coastal Tourism EIA guidelines, and SEA guidelines.

 

The Solomon Islands State of Environment Report 2019 has reached the approval stage by the Solomon Islands cabinet and is envisaged to be tabled in parliament within the next few months. The report was led and developed by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme with contributions from other government ministries and NGOs.
