Solomon Islands Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology

The NDS 2016-2035 maps out a strategic direction for the future development of Solomon Islands.

Solomon Islands Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology

Solomon Islands is composed of almost 1000 islands and has the second longest coastline and the second largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Pacific. These physical characteristics and the unique society and culture of the population are the basis of the fundamental relationship that Solomon Islanders have with the ocean. The Marine Atlas for the Solomon Islands compiles over a hundred datasets from countless data providers and for the first time makes marine and coastal information accessible and usable as data layers and as raw data.

Solomon Islands Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology

Material compiled by MACBIO on Marine ecosystem service valuation (MESV) in general and on MESV performed for Solomon Islands in 2015.
Marine ecosystem service valuation refers to the process of quantifying the human benefits of marine ecosystems in monetary units. Economic value is typically calculated as the gross value of an activity or product, minus costs, such as the cost of boats, nets, and wages for a fishing fleet.

As one step in Marine Spatial Planning the MACBIO project developed bioregions, or the classification of the marine environment into spatial units that host similar biota across the South West Pacific. Based on a scientific, technical process draft bioregions were developed and discussed and confirmed during a workshop in February 2018 resulting in the report on Bioregions at national scale for the Solomon Islands.

Summary Report of the National Marine Ecosystem Service Valuation of Solomon Islands conducted by MACBIO in 2015.

In the MABCBIO project, ACMCA was taken as focus area for community managed marine protected areas. This report examines the successes, challenges and lessons learned from the Arnavon Islands Community Marine Conservation Area (ACMCA). The objective of this research was to examine the various conservation efforts, methods and approaches applied in the Arnavons and assess what has worked, what has not worked and the main lessons learned.

Poster developed by MACBIO summarizing lessons learned in locally managed marine protected area ACMCA. Language English.

In April 2016, the Cabinet of the Solomon Islands Government endorsed the establishment of the Ocean12 National Steering Committee (comprising the twelve Ministries relevant to ocean management and use) with the mandate to progress Integrated Ocean Governance for the Solomon Islands. The Ocean12 set up a technical working group tasked with implementing the priority aspects of Integrated Ocean Governance including marine spatial planning and the development of an ocean policy.

Report on Marine Bioregion of the Solomon Islands

Draft Marine Bioregions of the Southwest Pacific
This report presents, for the first time, marine bioregions across the Southwest Pacific at a scale, which can be used nationally, as a basis for the systematic identification of an ecologically representative system of marine protected areas.

Technical Brief on Ocean Zones and their Application guidelines for Marine Spatial Planning. Ocean Zones were developed in a workshop by local experts in June 2017. The respective application guidelines were developed based on the defined ocean zones and best scientific knowledge.
Both resources are part of the MSP process commissioned by Ocean12 and supported by the MACBIO project. Ocean12 approved this technical brief in September 2019.
