Under the MESCAL project, the objectives of this assessment are to;
* Improve understanding of mangrove ecosystem functions, values, key threats, and processes at a local and regional scale;
* Provide a standardized method to assess shoreline mangrove condition and change over time;
* Generate community awareness of mangroves and encourage local environmental stewardship;
* Conduct a rapid and representative survey of fish and mobile crustacean assemblages;
This research is part of the Asia and the Pacific Policy Studies (APPS) Working Paper Series 04/ published October 2013. The Asia and the Pacific Policy Studies is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal that targets research in policy studies in Asia and the Pacific. The Journal aims to break down barriers across disciplines and generate policy impact.
This report outlines a baseline assessment of the water quality, sediment quality and aquatic ecology of the Metapona River system downstream of Gold Ridge Mine, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. The assessment was conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology in the Solomon Islands Government. This assessment will provide the framework to establish an integrated environmental monitoring program for the Metapona River system.
