19 August 2019, Apia, Samoa - The regional Inform project is holding a meeting this week to review progress towards building national and regional capacity to improve environmental decision-making through strengthening planning and reporting in the Pacific.

Barana Community in north-west Guadalcanal Province and Hadja Community in Makira Ulawa Province is now equip with some relevant tools and materials to deal with waste in their respective communities. This was made possible following the delivery of tools to Barana Community yesterday and the handing over of the materials and tools to Hadja Community for waste management two weeks ago.

The 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP18) convened in Geneva, Switzerland following the cancellation of the meeting in May in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the deadly blasts on Easter Sunday that killed over 300 people.

The Solomon Islands State of Environment Report 2019 has reached the approval stage by the Solomon Islands cabinet and is envisaged to be tabled in parliament within the next few months. The report was led and developed by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme with contributions from other government ministries and NGOs.

Our oceans produce more than half of the oxygen for the air we breathe, help regulate earth’s temperature, and provide us with food and medicines.

But pollution from plastics and other non-decomposing materials making their way into the waters, rising temperatures damaging coral reefs, and overfishing depleting marine life are threatening these vast resources.

A two days waste management workshop was conducted in the provincial capital of Central Province, Tulagi on Tuesday 30th July 2019 to Wednesday 31st July 2019. The workshop is facilitated by the Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management & Meteorology with supporting partners representing the Honiara City Council, Japan International Cooperation Agency through the J-PRISM II Project in collaboration with the Central Islands Provincial Government.

8 August 2019, Apia, Samoa - According to Solomon Islands' Meteorological Service (SIMS) Director David Hiba, the SIMS faces infrastructure challenges and the ongoing risk of tsunamis hitting Solomon Islands.

Mr. Hiba said the SIMS had expanded its network of seismographic equipment and tsunami detection in recent years. Further, work on tsunami inundation modelling for populated areas is to be done with Taiwan National University.
