Solomon Islands Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly

Sea surface temperatures over Solomon Islands reefs show a clear long-term warming trend, with anomalies increasingly above the historical baseline since the mid-1980s. Reef waters are therefore more often exposed to positive temperature anomalies linked to coral bleaching risk. Pacific reef waters around the Solomon Islands were about 0.82 °C warmer in 2022 than in 1990, with recent anomalies of around +0.8 °C to +1.2 °C creating thermal stress conditions. Despite this, Solomon Islands reefs remain relatively resilient, often maintaining high live coral cover and diversity at surveyed sites (Denley, Metaxas and Scheibling, 2020).
